5 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Replacement

PublishedJuly 10, 2026By JM Electric Panel

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. When it starts to fail, the symptoms are often subtle at first — a flickering light here, a tripped breaker there. But ignoring these signs can lead to serious safety risks, including electrical fires. Here are the five most common warning signs that your panel may need to be replaced.

1. Frequent Breaker Tripping

It is normal for a breaker to trip occasionally — especially if you plug in a high-draw appliance on a circuit that is already near capacity. But if you find yourself heading to the panel every week to reset a breaker, that is a red flag. Frequent tripping means your panel is either overloaded or the breakers themselves are worn out and no longer functioning correctly.

2. Flickering or Dimming Lights

Do your lights flicker when the air conditioner kicks on? Does the microwave cause the kitchen lights to dim? These are signs of voltage fluctuation caused by an undersized or failing panel. A properly functioning electrical panel should deliver consistent power to every circuit in the home, regardless of what other appliances are running.

3. Burning Smell or Scorch Marks

If you ever notice a burning smell near your electrical panel — or see scorch marks, melted wiring, or discoloration around the breakers — shut off the main breaker immediately and call a licensed electrician. These are signs of arcing or overheating inside the panel, and they represent an imminent fire hazard. Do not wait on this one.

If you see scorch marks on or around your panel, turn off the main breaker if it is safe to do so and call an electrician immediately. This is not a DIY situation.

Most electrical fires start inside the panel. The panel is the one place in your home where a small problem can become catastrophic in seconds.

4. Warm or Hot Panel Cover

Place your hand on the metal cover of your electrical panel. It should feel cool or at most room temperature. If the panel cover feels warm to the touch, the breakers or bus bar inside are overheating. This can happen when circuits are overloaded or when connections have loosened over time. Either way, it needs professional attention.

5. Your Panel Is Over 25 Years Old

Age alone is a valid reason to replace an electrical panel. Panels manufactured before 1990 often use outdated technology that was not designed to handle the electrical demands of a modern home. Brands like Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Pushmatic, and Challenger are all known to have design flaws that make them unsafe. If your panel has any of these names on it, replacement should be a priority — regardless of whether you have noticed any symptoms.

  • Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) — high failure rate, breakers may not trip during overload
  • Zinsco — aluminum bus bars corrode and cause arcing
  • Pushmatic — breakers can stick in the ON position
  • Challenger — known for loose connections and overheating
  • Any fuse box still in use — fuses can be bypassed with oversized replacements

If your home still has one of these panels, the safest time to replace it is now — before it gives you a reason to regret waiting. Most panel replacements are completed in a single day by a licensed electrician, and the peace of mind is well worth the investment.

If you have noticed any of these signs in your home, do not wait for a small problem to become a dangerous one. Our licensed electricians can assess your panel the same day, and most replacements are completed within hours — not days.
